San Jose Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda is once again being linked to a move away from MLS, this time to the vacant Chile men's national team job.
Multiple reports out of Chile are linking Almeyda to the job, with one report suggesting he is the leading candidate. ESPN Chile is also linking former Monterrey head coach Antonio Mohamed to the job, vacant since Reinaldo Rueda left for the Colombia job this month. Four games into qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, Chile have one win, one draw and two losses. They sit in sixth place in CONMEBOL, two points away from a qualifying spot.
During this MLS offseason, Almeyda has been rumored to be on the shortlist of multiple different teams. Those teams include Brazil's Palmeiras, and Mexican sides Monterrey and Cruz Azul; coincidentally, Mohamed was also linked to the Cruz Azul job.
Almeyda has been with the Earthquakes since the 2019 season, missing the playoffs in his first season but participating in the postseason in 2020. The Earthquakes were knocked out in Round One of the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs by Sporting Kansas City.
