MLS midfielder Felipe, a citizen of Brazil and Italy, is dreaming of one day playing in a World Cup ... with the United States.
That’s according to a report by MSG Network's Kristian Dyer during Sunday's broadcast of the New York Red Bulls’ 2-1 win at D.C. United.
Citing sources close to the player, Dyer stated that RBNY’s Brazilian-born midfield dynamo is moving through the process of attaining full United States citizenship (he currently holds a green card) and hopes to become eligible for US national team selection during the 2022 World Cup cycle.
“I'm being told that Felipe is in the process of obtaining his citizenship, probably about 2, 2 1/2 years away,” said Dyer. “He wants to play for the United States national team, that he sees himself potentially being in the mix for World Cup qualifying for 2022.
Felipe arrived in MLS in 2012, joining the Montreal Impact for their expansion season after being discovered by head coach Jesse Marsch on a scouting trip to Switzerland.
When Marsch took over the New York Red Bulls ahead of the 2015 season, he acquired Felipe in a trade with the Impact and he's gone on to play all but two regular season matches in the last three MLS seasons for the Red Bulls.
