The New York Red Bulls could be set for some significant turnover in their backline this offseason, as Metro New York's Kristian Dyer reported on Monday that defenders Damien Perrinelle (pictured above) and Gideon Baah are unlikely to return to the team in 2018.
Perrinelle, 34, has been a familiar figure in the Red Bulls defense since he joined the team in July 2014. He was a key figure in the Red Bulls' run to the 2015 Supporters' Shield, starting 27 of the 28 games he appeared in during the regular season. A fan favorite, Perrinelle would total 65 regular-season appearances in addition to six postseason appearances. He appeared in all but 18 minutes of RBNY's three playoff games in 2017.
The Frenchman may not be completely done with the Red Bulls, though – citing a source, the report claims that Perrinelle has been offered a scouting position within the organization should he decided to retire, though it believed he will first consider any opportunities to keep playing before a front-office position.
Baah, 26, has struggled to stay on the field during his two-year tenure in New York. The Ghanaian center back picked up an injury in his third game with the Red Bulls, and though he would recover to make six more appearances in 2016, he was placed on the Season-Ending Injury list at the beginning of the 2017 season.
Per the report, the Red Bulls are expected to bring back the other three center backs currently on their roster – Aurelien Collin, Michael Murillo and Fidel Escobar – for the 2018 season.
The Red Bulls are heading into the offseason after falling to Toronto FC on away goals in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, following a sixth-place finish in the Eastern Conference.
