A new report from Los Angeles-based, Spanish-language outlet LaOpinion on Monday says that Liga MX side Monterrey is in pursuit of San Jose Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda and that the sides have already been in contact.
We've been down this road before, as Almeyda has been linked to Monterrey as well as his former team Chivas Guadalajara in the past, with none of those rumors coming to fruition. As such, it's hard to tell how much of this has wheels and how much is just a product of silly season rumors, with the Quakes out of the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs following a penalty-shootout defeat to Sporting Kansas City.
The LaOpinion report did cite an additional report from Multimedios reporter Santiago Fourcade saying that the sides had been in contact, as Rayados look to fill their head coaching position following the recent parting of ways with manager Antonio Mohamed.
Almeyda is coming off his second season in charge of the Quakes, where he guided San Jose to a playoff spot for the first time since 2017 despite an erratic season that saw the team endure a handful of alarmingly lopsided defeats, but steady the ship down the stretch.
The 46-year-old managed Argentine sides River Plate and Banfield before a four-season run with Chivas that included a Concacaf Champions League title that preceded his move to MLS. He's currently under contract with San Jose through the 2022 season.
