UPDATE (Wednesday, 12 pm ET): Kaku's one-time switch to Paraguay became official on Wednesday and he was called into Gustavo Morinigo's squad for an international friendly against Japan on June 12 in Austria. He will depart for camp on June 4.
The wheels are apparently in motion for Alejandro Romero Gamarra’s one-time transfer to Paraguay.
A week after the Argentine-born playmaker was considering the switch, the president of the Paraguayan Football Association, Robert Harrison, said the process has begun for the New York Red Bulls midfielder’s switch to La Albirroja, according to Paraguayan newspaper ABC Color.
Kaku, who has an MLS-leading nine assists in nine games played, represented Argentina at the youth levels, including three appearances in the 2015 U-20 World Cup in New Zealand with one start. He hasn’t been called up to Argentina’s senior squad.
According to the paper, Harrison said “there are three players in that situation, one of them is him. They play in very important leagues.” Kaku’s parents are Paraguayan citizens who moved to Argentina before he was born.
He would potentially be joining Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almiron in the Paraguayan setup and they could be joined by Almiron's club teammate, as the paper claims Hector Villalba, another Argentine-born attacking player, would be following in Kaku’s footsteps in making the switch.
