Could a Crew SC legend be set for a move to one of Columbus’ biggest rivals?
According to various reports, former Crew SC midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto – who won the 2008 MLS MVP award and led Columbus to their only MLS Cup title that same year – is a candidate for the Chicago Fire’s vacant head coaching job. First reported on Wednesday, the story was pushed along on Friday, when Chicago Fire Confidential’s Guillermo Rivera reported that Barros Schelotto will travel from Argentina to the US in the next 7-10 days to meet with new Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez about the position.
The news comes on the heels of a Thursday report from Goal.com's Ives Galarcep that pegged US Under-20 head coach Tab Ramos as the frontrunner for the Fire job.
Barros Schelotto, 42, left the Crew in 2010 after four years in Columbus, playing a final year in Argentina before retiring and taking the reins of Argentine Primera club Lanús in June 2012. He won the 2013 Copa Sudamericana with the club and coached current Portland Timbers attackers Diego Valeri and Lucas Melano at Lanús before their respective moves to MLS.
Chicago fired former head coach Frank Yallop in September, with technical director Brian Bliss serving as interim manager through the end of the season. The Fire finished 2015 with an 8-20-6 record, the worst mark in MLS.
