Felipe Gutierrez was a very early candidate for MLS Newcomer of the Year, scoring five goals in six appearances and winning MLS Player of the Month in March.
But he's been sidelined following sports hernia surgery in April, and while Sporting Kansas City have been holding down the fort in his absence, fans are wondering when the Chilean midfielder will be back in action after the initial announcement estimated he would be out 2-3 months.
The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell offered an update in a mailbag column on Wednesday. McDowell reported that Sporting have targeted August 1 as a goal to have Gutierrez healthy and ready to play in game action, and in fact, Gutierrez may be ahead of schedule and could return sooner than that.
