LA Galaxy star Steven Gerrard could soon be making the transition from player to coach back home in his native England, according to an English media report.
In a Saturday report dubbed an “exclusive,” The Sun tabloid claimed that Gerrard has been offered a role coaching the Under-21 squad at his old club Liverpool FC, a stepping stone to a bigger post with the England national team once he completes his coaching certifications.
“The ex-skipper is seen as having a bright future with England and will be offered a job with young players as he takes his UEFA badges,” writes The Sun's Mike McGrath.
The Sun also asserts that Gerrard, an England legend and former Three Lions captain with 114 caps and 21 goals in his international career, is one of several veteran players who will be consulted about the English FA's choice of a replacement for Roy Hodgson, who stepped down as manager after England's star-crossed Euro 2016 campaign ended with an upset loss to Iceland in that tournament's quarterfinal stage last month.
A 2015 midsummer arrival in Los Angeles, Gerrard has notched four goals and 10 assists in 25 regular-season MLS appearances (23 starts) to date. He registered his first multi-assist match for LA in Monday's 2-0 blanking of the Vancouver Whitecaps.
