TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
The Colorado Rapids have rejected an offer in the region of £400,000 from Championship club Barnsley for US men’s national team winger Jonathan Lewis, according to ESPN's Tom Hamilton.
Barnsley were recently linked to another promising MLS talent in FC Dallas right back Reggie Cannon, according to MLSsoccer.com's Tom Bogert. Meanwhile, Hamilton adds that other Championship (second tier) teams are also interested in Colorado's 23-year-old attacker.
Lewis previously played in England for lower-division sides Bradford City and Farsley Celtic before featuring at NCAA Division I program Akron in 2016. He also holds a British passport, cutting out work-permit issues around any potential move.
But Lewis has also proven his worth with Colorado, recording eight goals and three assists 21 appearances since joining via trade midway through the 2019 campaign. He first entered MLS in 2017 with NYCFC, though never quite carved out a starting role at the Eastern Conference club.
Much of Lewis’ MLS career has been in the super-sub role, with roughly one-third (16) of his 52 appearances coming off the bench. An electric dribbler who has three goals already this campaign – a match-winner against D.C. United and late equalizer against Real Salt Lake (seen above) – Lewis has logged clutch performances.
As for his USMNT experience, Lewis has earned six caps for the senior side. He debuted in a series of January 2019 camp friendlies against Panama and Costa Rica, which were head coach Gregg Berhalter’s first games at the helm.
