Nick Rimando has been a stalwart for Real Salt Lake for many seasons, but could he be on his way to a new MLS club?
There's interest, anyway, according to a report from SI.com's Grant Wahl on Wednesday. MLS expansion side Atlanta United, who will enter the league next season, are looking to pick up Rimando, according to the report.
Rimando, 37, just concluded his 10th season with RSL, after the club was eliminated from the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs in the Knockout Round. The US international has rewritten the MLS record books this season, breaking previous marks in total appearances by a player, most wins, most shutouts, most minutes played and most starts. He has also won the MLS Cup twice in his career to date, with D.C. United in 2004 and RSL in 2009.
Atlanta United currently have one goalkeeper, Alexander Tambakis, on their roster ahead of their inaugural season. Tambakis spent the 2016 season with Atlanta United's USL affiliate, Charleston Battery.
Wahl's report notes Rimando remains under contract through the 2017 season. When asked about possible outside interest in Rimando, a Real Salt Lake spokesperson told MLSsoccer.com, "I would imagine that 21 teams would want one or both of our goalkeepers."
