UPDATE (July 6):FC Dallas were withdrawn from the tournament given the impact on the club's ability to train and play competitive matches after 10 players and one technical staff member tested positive for COVID-19.
UPDATE (July 4): The match between FC Dallas and Vancouver Whitecaps was postponed to provide extra days of training for both Dallas and Vancouer.
FC Dallas and the Vancouver Whitecaps will meet in a Group B game originally scheduled for July 9 but postponed to a to be confirmed later date in the Group Stage presented by Heineken.
A young and hungry FC Dallas side have been a trendy pick as a dark-horse candidate to make a run at the tournament, so Luchi Gonzalez's group will be looking to show those predictions were founded.
Part of the reason for that is FCD's talented crop of young players, including Paxton Pomykal, Jesus Ferreira, Reggie Cannon and the emerging Tanner Tessmann -- all of whom figure to get plenty of minutes to make an impact. New forward Franco Jara, who joined the club during the league's postponement bringing proven Liga MX pedigree with him, is also eligible to play in the tournament and gives Gonzalez a potential difference-maker up top.
Dallas are 1-0-1 coming into the tournament, with a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Union in their season opener on Feb. 29, and a 2-2 draw against the Montreal Impact on March 7.
The Whitecaps might not carry similar expectations given their last-place finish in the Western Conference a season ago, but don't count Marc dos Santos and Co. out. Canadian international Lucas Cavallini is a proven goal-scorer imported from Liga MX in his own right and Vancouver bagged a big victory in their second match of the MLS season, topping the LA Galaxy 1-0 on the road on March 7.
