With playoff kicking off, how have the US fared at the Olympics all-time?

On Friday evening the US Under-23 national team will take the field in Barranquilla, Colombia, hoping to secure their spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The game (5 pm ET; FS1/UDN) will be the first two legs between the US and Colombia as both failed to qualify in their regional qualifying tournaments.

Andreas Herzog's team missed their first opportunity to make the tournament after they were defeated in the semifinals of the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship by Honduras in October. If the US don't get the job done over the next week, then it would be the second consecutive Olympics in which the team will not participate.

The USA were a frequent participant in the Olympics during the early days of the tournament, appearing in every tournament from 1924-56. However, they didn't experience much success, never finishing higher than eighth place. The US qualified for three more tournaments from 1972-88 before the tournament rules changed.

Starting with the 1992 Olympics, only players under the age of 23 were allowed to play. The rule was amended in 1996 to allow up to three players over 23 to be included on a team's roster.

The US qualified for the tournament in 1992, 2000 and 2008 and automatically qualified in 1996, when the Olympics were held in the United States.

The 2000 tournament in Sydney was by far the teams most successful outing. They made it all the way to the semifinals behind strong play from Landon Donovan, Peter Vagenas and Frankie Hejduk, among others. You can check out how the US men have done at every Olympic tournament below:
