OBETZ, Ohio ā Federico Higuain stepped up to the penalty spot in a gigantic moment in Thursdayās epic Knockout Round match between Columbus Crew SC and Atlanta United.
His goalkeeper, Zack Steffen, had just saved a Julian Gressel shot to give Columbus an early edge in the penalty-kick shootout that would decide the 0-0 match. And with 67,221 fans screaming in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Higuain calmly jogged up to the ball and lightly chipped it straight down the middle as Brad Guzan dived to the right.
Higuain had just executed a āPanenka,ā the cheekiest of PK approaches, in the biggest moment of the match, and even his teammates ā who have seen him create plenty of magic ā were floored.
āThe confidence to do that is just ridiculous; it really is,ā Wil Trapp said. āYouāre not surprised, but youāre like, āDid he really just do that?ā The first one, in front of their fans. Itās kind of disbelief, but at the same time, you almost expect him to do something.ā
Despite its importance, the shot was no big deal for Higuain. He said he didnāt plan it with his teammates or consult anyone about it ā he simply felt like it was the right play.
āItās just the moment,ā he said Friday. āMy teammates trust in me and I trust in my teammates. I knew it was a very important PK because it was the first one. But I think itās also a simple way to score.ā
Head coach Gregg Berhalter is happy to defer to his Argentine playmaker in that moment, calling the play was āa big statement.ā
āPipa is a very intelligent player,ā Berhalter said. āHe knew exactly what he was doing. He knew exactly the tone that was going to set.ā

Higuainās shot did just that. The next shooter up was Atlantaās Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, who attempted a similar shot straight down the middle. Steffen didnāt budge, and Columbus was in the driverās seat.
āI think it might have hurt them more than it helped us,ā Justin Meram said. āEspecially because one of their guys tried to do it and then it didnāt work. So it worked out perfectly.ā
For Higuain, the shot was just a continuation of what he said Columbus tried to do for the entire match. He said Crew SC were ācalm the whole game,ā just like he was in his penalty kick.
āFrom the first minute, it was, āLet them know that we were there to play soccer,āā he said. āMy PK was kind of that idea to say, āWe respect you, but weāre here to play our game.āā
And while Columbus will be advancing thanks to their penalty-kick prowess, Higuain said he doesnāt even enjoy the concept.
āI donāt like to finish a game in that way,ā he said as he shook his head, ā[whether] you win the game or lose the game.ā
Will watching Higuainās penalty inspire his Columbus teammates to take a shot at their own high-pressure Panenka in the future?
āHell no,ā Meram said with a laugh.
