The Philadelphia Union and midfielder Jose Martinez have agreed to a new contract, the club announced Wednesday. The deal is through 2022 with club options through 2024.

Martinez, 26, joined the Union ahead of the 2020 season from Venezuelan club Zulia FC. He didn't take long to settle in then became an integral part of the starting XI, helping guide the team to the 2020 Supporters' Shield. He made 14 regular season starts, missing time with the Venezuelan national team.

“Jose’s passion and physicality gives us an extra edge every time he steps on the field,” sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a club statement. “He has proven to be dominant in our midfield, vital in the transition on attack and we are looking forward to seeing his continued development and contributions.”

Martinez is the latest Union player to sign a new contract, following left back Kai Wagner.

The club's offseason started with Brenden Aaronson officially moving to RB Salzburg and Mark McKenzie signing with Genk, two huge transfers. They have yet to bring in senior additions to the squad, though expect to be busy over the coming weeks.
