TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Transfer
The Philadelphia Union have added to their defense by signing German left back Kai Wagner from Würzburger Kickers for an undisclosed fee, the club announced Wednesday.
Wagner, 21, has been with Würzburger in the German third division for the past two seasons, where he has accrued 44 appearances with the club. Prior to that, he spent a season with Schalke 04 II.
“We are delighted to complete Kai’s signing as he is an up-and-coming and very physical left fullback with high ability and even further potential,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a statement. “Kai has joined us in Clearwater and we look forward to introducing him to his new teammates and integrating him as quickly as possible.”
Wagner adds to an already young backline, as the 21-year-old joins Auston Trusty (20), Mark McKenzie (19), Olivier Mbaizo (21), Jack Elliott (23) and Matthew Real (19) as some members of the defensive ranks.
"(Wagner is) very dynamic, he's very physical," Tanner said. "He can cover a lot of ground and he's quick. You have somebody who is going in both directions very quick and they are not so many players capable of doing this."
Wagner should battle with Real and Fabinho for playing time at left back.
