Veteran midfielder Patrice Bernier wants to return to the Montreal Impact for one more season, according to TVA Sports’ Frederic Lord and confirmed by the player himself during end-of-season availability on Friday.
Bernier, 37, has been with the Impact for the entirety of their MLS existence. He played 20 regular-season matches for the club this year and was a huge part of their Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs run, starting all five of the Impact’s postseason contests and recording two assists before Montreal were eliminated by Toronto on Wednesday night.
According to local radio station 91.9 Sports' Twitter account, Bernier confirmed his interest in returning to the club when speaking to reporters on Friday.
"Yes, I want to continue playing," the station quoted Bernier in French. "I'll see with the club in the next few days if this is possible."
Lord reported that Bernier and the Impact have agreed to meet in mid-December to discuss a potential contract for 2017.
A native of Montreal, Bernier’s history with the Impact predates the franchise's time in MLS, as he also played with the club in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
