A 2021 reunion between Pablo Piatti and Toronto FC may not be in the cards.
The Argentine winger took to Instagram on Friday, wishing Toronto “the best in the future” and thanking the club for his experience. After the 2020 season, Toronto declined the 31-year-old’s contract option, opening a Designated Player spot for the upcoming campaign.
Through 17 games (16 starts) with the Reds, Piatti had four goals and four assists. He was one of Toronto’s three DPs in 2020, with US men’s national team forward Jozy Altidore and midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo, the reigning Landon Donovan MLS MVP, occupying the other tags.
After Piatti’s 2021 contract option was declined, Toronto general manager Ali Curtis said the club remained in conversations about the winger possibly returning. In the meantime, Greg Vanney departed to coach the LA Galaxy and Chris Armas was brought in as his replacement, leaving a vacant DP slot as the former New York Red Bulls boss looks to leave his mark.
Piatti joined Toronto in February 2020 with a lengthy La Liga résumé that included stops at Almeria, Valencia and Espanyol, scoring 48 goals and 42 assists across nearly 300 games. He’s also been capped once by Argentina’s national team.
