Prior to the 2020 season, the Atlanta United-Orlando City SC "rivalry" was one-sided.
Orlando had never beaten the 2018 MLS Cup champions in the first two seasons of the rivalry but in the first matchup of this season, the Lions beat Atlanta 3-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. After two draws, Orlando trounced the Five Stripes 4-1 Wednesday night and injured Orlando striker Dom Dwyer took the chance to get some payback.
Dwyer is clearly referencing a Josef Martinez from last year, after Atlanta beat Orlando in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup semifinals. Martinez missed the match with an injury and reveled in the win from the comforts of his own home.
