New York City FC midfielder Yangel Herrera will miss the remainder of the 2018 season after undergoing a successful arthroscopic ankle procedure, the club announced on Thursday.
The Venezuelan international sustained the injury in a 3-1 defeat to the Houston Dynamo on May 25 and missed NYCFC’s past two games. His extended absence presents coach Patrick Vieira with a hole to fill in deep midfield.
One of the breakout stars of last year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, Herrera has made 33 appearances for NYCFC, scoring once, contributing five assists and producing many influential performances in the center of the park for the Cityzens. The 20-year-old is currently with NYCFC on loan from sibling club Manchester City.
