BRONX, N.Y. — Ronald Matarrita, whose time at New York City FC has been marred by numerous injuries, was forced out of Wednesday night’s match against the Chicago Fire with an apparent calf injury.
The Costa Rican international went to the ground at Yankee Stadium in the 31st minute and was immediately replaced by Ben Sweat. Matarrita walked gingerly across the field at halftime toward the locker room with ice wrapped around his right calf.
It is just the latest of a long line of injury concerns for Matarrita, who missed last summer’s World Cup with grade one tear of his hamstring. In 2017, the 24-year-old missed four months with a broken fifth metatarsal of his right foot, which required surgery and has also been sidelined with a high ankle sprain.
The latest injury comes after Matarrita started three straight games and four of the last four NYCFC contests, playing all but six minutes.
