Fredy Montero’s return to the Vancouver Whitecaps could be happening sooner than later.
The Colombian forward’s contract has been terminated by Sporting CP in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, possibly opening the door for a move back to the Pacific Northwest.
The 31-year-old scored three goals in 20 appearances for Sporting CP since his move back to Lisbon last January. He previously played for Sporting from July 2013 to February 2016, first on loan from the Seattle Sounders and subsequently via a permanent transfer with a reported seven-figure fee attached.
With just one pure forward on a rebuilt roster, the Caps could use an attacker with MLS experience and Montero, who scored 13 goals in 33 regular season appearances in his lone season with the Whitecaps in 2017, certainly fits that bill.
New Vancouver coach Marc dos Santos said it was “possible” Montero could be added to his roster in an interview with TSN1040 last week.
“He is a player at Sporting Lisbon,” dos Santos said. “He was a player of the Vancouver Whitecaps. Do I like him? Yes, I like him.”
