The New York Red Bulls made a slew of roster moves on Monday, announcing that they’ve re-signed Luis Robles, Mike Grella and Sal Zizzo to multi-year contract extensions and that they’ve agreed to a deal to bring back Shaun Wright-Phillips for the 2016 season.
The Red Bulls also announced that they’ve released goalkeeper Santiago Castano.
Per league and club policy, additional terms of the deals were not disclosed.
"We are happy to bring Shaun back and to sign three of our key core players to new multi-year contracts," Red Bulls sporting director Ali Curtis said in a statement released by the club.
The Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and a MLS Best XI selection in 2015, Robles started all 34 of New York’s regular season games last year, setting single-season club records for wins (18) and shutouts (nine) to help the Red Bulls to the Supporters’ Shield. Currently in camp with the US national team, the 31-year-old Robles has started and played every minute in 106 consecutive league matches since debuting for New York in 2012.
Grella, 29, was a revelation for New York last year. The Long Island-native signed with the club in February after a successful preseason trial, and scored nine goals and recorded seven assists in 33 regular season appearances.
Zizzo also had a successful first year with New York, appearing in 22 games as a winger and right back after being acquired in a preseason trade with New York City FC.
The older brother of Red Bulls star striker Bradley Wright-Phillips, Shaun Wright-Phillips signed with the Red Bulls last July, scoring one goal and recording one assist in 12 games with the club in 2015. He did not have his option picked up following last season, but was able to come to terms with the club on a new deal.
