Haiti moved one step closer to securing their spot in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup this past weekend, and they got help from one of the New York Red Bulls' brightest youngsters.
Haiti defeated Trinidad & Tobago, 4-3, in extra time of their 2017 Caribbean Cup qualification match on Sunday, and they were able to pull out the result after Derrick Etienne scored an impressive equalizer to bring the game level at 1-1 in the 20th minute. The 20-year-old Etienne canceled out the Soca Warriors' first-minute opener by collecting a pass on left side of the penalty area, and turning to unleash a wicked, right-footed bender to the far post.
The goal, which helped eliminate Trinidad & Tobago from Gold Cup contention, was Etienne's first in his international career.
Etienne signed with the Red Bulls in late 2015 and was in his rookie season last year. He made one brief appearance for the club, but was a regular for their second team that won the USL title.
With Red Bulls II, the Etienne had a combined six goals and six assists in the regular season and playoffs.
