Erik Sorga's strike at the death gave short-handed D.C. United a wild 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena.
Given a second corner kick in second-half extra time, the visitors made the most of it. Sorga had space to shoot after the ball was deflected out of the goal box, and curled it past RBNY goalkeeper Ryan Meara for his first MLS goal.
New York didn't have enough time to get off a good shot after Sorga's goal, and D.C. United ended a six-game winless streak. The Red Bulls have just one win in their last six matches with a 1W-4L-1D mark.
Despite out-shooting the visitors 17-5, the Red Bulls couldn't get a try past D.C. goalkeeper Chris Seitz, who had four saves.
The first half belonged to the hosts and saw New York's best chances for a goal. The Red Bulls outshot D.C. United 10-2. Tom Barlow had two opportunities on one possession stopped in the 27th minute, one by Seitz and the rebound going off a post.
D.C. United were playing without starting goalkeeper Bill Hamid, out for personal reasons, and injured defender Steven Birnbaum. Also, it was their first match without midfielder Felipe Martins, who suffered a torn ACL in training earlier in the week.
