Seeking their first U.S. Open Cup victory, New York City FC head to the home of their successful academy— Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University — to break out of their slump as they host USL Championship side North Carolina FC Tuesday night.

In four previous USOC games, NYCFC twice lost to the New York Cosmos and the New York Red Bulls and have been shutout in each of their last three appearances.

New York City FC

Is this the year NYCFC finally get out of the fourth round and perhaps make a run in the USOC? The good news for the Cityzens is they have more young American talent as part of a deep roster than ever before and they enter with an MLS-best 10-match unbeaten streak, including a 5-2 win over FC Cincinnati at Yankee Stadium Thursday.

Alexandru Mitrita, Heber and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi staked NYCFC to a three-goal advantage before the half-hour mark. Dome Torrent lamented his team taking their collective foot off the gas to close out the first half, but they picked things up after halftime with another goal by Heber and the last by Maxi Moralez.

North Carolina FC

Coached by Dave Sarachan, North Carolina FC entered the USOC in the second round, where they defeated the Richmond Kickers of USL League One, 4-1. With the score tied at 1 entering the second half, Robert Kristo struck for a brace in an eight-minute span and Yamikani Chester added a fourth goal in the 70th minute.

In the third round, also played at WakeMed Soccer Park, D.J. Taylor scored the lone goal two minutes into the second half to defeat Florida Soccer Soldiers from the UPSL.
