New York City FC have claimed defender Matt Miazga off waivers through the end of the 2026 season, the club announced Tuesday.
The 31-year-old center back was waived by FC Cincinnati last week, making him eligible for selection
Miazga was a crucial piece of Cincinnati's ascent following his return to MLS in August 2022 from English Premier League giants Chelsea FC. He made 108 appearances for Cincinnati across all competitions and earned MLS Defender of the Year, Best XI and All-Star honors in 2023.
A Red Bull New York homegrown product, Miazga will now represent the other side of the Hudson River Derby. He turned pro with RBNY in 2013, making 42 appearances for the club.
"We’re excited to welcome Matt to New York City," said sporting director Todd Dunivant. "Matt brings experience, mentality, and a competitive edge to our backline. His leadership will be valuable as we enter the final stretch of the season."
Internationally, Miazga has earned 28 caps with the United States. He helped win the 2017 Concacaf Gold Cup and 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League.
While at Chelsea, Miazga’s featured primarily on loan with Vitesse (Netherlands), Anderlecht (Belgium), Alavés (Spain), Nantes (France) and more.
