TRANSFER TRACKER SIGNING: Transfer
The New England Revolution have completed the signing of Spanish attacker Carles Gil from Deportivo de La Coruña, the club announced Wednesday. Gil has been added to the roster as a Designated Player.
Gil, 26, has spent time in La Liga with Deportivo, Elche and Valencia, as well as the English Premier League, with Aston Villa. Deportivo were relegated to the Spanish second division ahead of this season, where Gil has made 18 appearances (12 starts) in 2018/19.
“He’s very technical on the ball and he’s a creator,” Revolution GM Michael Burns said in a media release. “He’s an attacking midfielder, a number-10 type player. I think he’s going to add a dimension to our team that we don’t currently have and hopefully make all the players around him a little bit better."
The Spaniard has featured at right wing and attacking midfield predominantly throughout his career. Since joining Deportivo in 2016, Gil has a goal and seven assists in 54 appearances.
“We’ve had multiple conversations with him and he’s really excited about coming here, so that’s really important to us when we’re talking to players and recruiting players, and ultimately signing players,” said Burns. “I don’t want to put too many expectations on him, but we’re planning on him being a big piece for us. The fact that he is really excited about coming here and playing in MLS, and playing for New England, mattered an awful lot to us.”
