TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS:Signing
The New England Revolution have used allocation money to sign 24-year-old French defensive midfielder Wilfried Zahibo, the club announced Thursday.
The Marseille native, who had once been on the books at Spanish powerhouse Valencia CF, has made 125 appearances and logged more than 10,000 minutes across a seven-year pro career. He joins a Revs side that allowed an Eastern Conference-worst 61 league goals in 2017.
Completion of the signing is pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.
“As we continue to add players to the 2018 roster, we believe Wilfried is a player who will improve the quality of our team,” Revolution GM Michael Burns said in a team statement. “He is a player capable of impacting matches from his central midfield role and we look forward to integrating him into our team as soon as possible.”
The right-footed midfielder's most recent experience includes two seasons with Gimnàstic de Tarragona of La Liga 2, where he made 24 appearances. Before that, Zahibo spent three seasons with Valencia but rarely got into the first team. He had two starts in La Liga in 2016, and the remainder of his seven first-team appearances came in the Copa del Rey. He also appeared 68 times for Valencia's reserves.
A native of Marseille, France, Zahibo spent his youth career and the first three years of his professional career with French side AC Ajaccio, playing mostly for the reserves but also getting time with the first team in the 2012-13 Coupe de France.
