The Montreal Impact are set to acquire midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from Chicago Fire FC in exchange for $800,000 in General Allocation Money, which could rise to $1 million if performance-based incentives are hit, a source confirmed to MLSsoccer.com. The Fire will retain a 10% sell-on fee as well.
The Athletic's Sam Stejskal and Paul Tenorio first reported the news. The Athletic also reported Mihailovic will sign a new contract with Montreal.
A source told MLSsoccer.com that Mihailovic was entering the final year of his current deal.
Mihailovic, 22, signed a Homegrown deal with the Fire in 2017 and has been a regular in the squad since then. He had two goals and seven assists in 20 appearances (14 starts) in 2020.
He made his senior US national team debut in 2019.
Mihailovic would be the latest blockbuster intra-MLS trade made by the Impact, who acquired Mason Toye from Minnesota United for $600,000 GAM and a 2021 MLS SuperDraft second-round pick towards the end of the Secondary Transfer Window. The club also just added former Orlando City defender Kamal Miller from Austin FC for $225,000 and the No. 11 overall selection in the SuperDraft in an Expansion Draft-day trade.
The Impact made the playoffs in 2020 before falling to the New England Revolution in the play-in round. Chicago fell one point short of the playoff line.
It's been a busy offseason thus far for Chicago, who have already signed forward Chinonso Offor, winger Stanislav Ivanov and defender Jhon Espinoza. The Impact have already welcomed defender Zorhan Bassong so far this winter.
