Didier Drogba has been an absolute revelation since joining MLS, scoring seven goals in six games since moving to the Montreal Impact this summer.
The legendary Ivorian striker has now been recognized for his outstanding play, voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 30 of the season after notching one goal in Montreal’s 2-1 win against Chicago last Wednesday and tallying a brace in the Impact’s 2-0 weekend win against D.C. This is Drogba’s second Player of the Week honor of the year; the striker earned the award for Week 27 after his hat trick against Chicago in his first MLS start.
Drogba scored Montreal’s opener in the win over Chicago, brushing aside Fire defender Jeff Larentowicz to head home a Nigel Reo-Coker cross in the 39th minute. He had both of the Impact’s goals against D.C., smashing in a curling, Goal of the Week-nominated free kick in the fourth minute before leaving defender Steve Birnbaum in the dust and chipping goalkeeper Bill Hamid to give Montreal a 2-0 lead in the 11th.
The wins gave Montreal a bit of breathing room for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot, with the sixth-place Impact now holding a four point advantage – and two games in hand – on seventh-place Orlando City SC ahead of Saturday’s match against the Lions at the Citrus Bowl (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE).
