The Montreal Impact added to their forward corps on Thursday, when they announced that they have acquired Italian striker Matteo Mancosu on a year-long loan from Serie A club Bologna.
Mancosu, 31, spent the first half of last season with Bologna, but was loaned to Carpi – who were relegated from Serie A at the end of the season – for the second half of the year. He appeared 23 times in all competitions for both teams, scoring two goals in Serie A action and adding another tally in Coppa Italia play.
“We are happy to add another experienced striker to our roster,” Impact technical director Adam Braz said in a statement released by the club. “He is someone who will complement our other attacking players and provide another attacking option for the second half of the season and beyond.”
Mancosu has spent the vast majority of his career in Italy’s lower divisions, not making his Serie B debut until the 2013-14 season. He finished that year as the top scorer in the second-division, scoring 26 goals in 40 games with Trapani Calcio. He followed that season up with 10 goals in 19 games with Trapani in the first half of the 2014-15 season, then moved to Bologna – where Impact owner/president Joey Saputo also serves as chairman – in January 2015. He helped the team win promotion back to Serie A that year, appearing in 15 league matches and two promotion playoff games.
The 5-foot-10, 165 pound forward will join Didier Drogba, Dominic Oduro, Michael Salazar, Anthony Jackson-Hamel and Cameron Porter as the forwards on Montreal’s roster.
