MLS Preseason 2020: Portland Timbers cruise to win over Municipal Grecia in Costa Rica

The Portland Timbers maintained their winning ways during the club’s preseason trip to Costa Rica, knocking off top-flight side Municipal Grecia 3-1 on Wednesday after previously beating Saprissa last weekend.

The victory was powered by a second-half brace from midfielder Eryk Williamson, who found the back of the net in the 59th and 65th minutes. New forward Felipe Mora opened the scoring in the 17th minute, only for Grecia to draw level at 1-1 in the 24th minute from a free kick.

Head coach Giovanni Savarese started with a first-choice XI, and then brought in a reserve-heavy lineup for the second half.

Williamson is entering his third season with Portland, after his Homegrown Player rights were acquired via trade from D.C. United in January 2018. Meanwhile, Mora scored his first goal with the Timbers since the Chilean forward was signed on loan from Liga MX's Pumas UNAM last week.

Before returning to the Pacific Northwest to host their own preseason tournament, Portland awaits another Costa Rican test this coming Sunday against Herediano. The Timbers open their MLS regular-season campaign March 1 at home against Minnesota United.
