After scoring two gorgeous goals to lead his team to a stunning road victory over the runaway league leaders, Minnesota United striker Mason Toye has been voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 26 of the 2019 regular season.
Fresh off receiving a call-up to the US Under-23 national team, Toye seized the spotlight for the Loons as they upset LAFC 2-0 on Sunday, striking on two quick counterattacks in the first half to inflict the first home loss of the league season on the Black & Gold.
That brace runs Toye's season total to six goals and three assists in 11 MLS appearances; MNUFC are 5-0-1 when he turns up on the scoresheet. His contributions also gave his playoff-chasing side a useful shot in the arm, as the unexpected win markedly enhanced their projected odds of qualifying for the postseason for the first time in their three seasons in the league.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
