This summer, a handful of players vital to their teams will be on the move if the clubs can't agree to new deals.
There are a number of key players on loans set to expire this summer, but work is being done to ensure that doesn't happen. Here's where five players stand:
Jamiro Monteiro
Latest news: Monteiro extended through 2019 season
Thankfully for Union supporters, there is no mystery to Monteiro's future ... for 2019 at least.
“It is not a big secret that we will extend his loan until the end of the season, for sure, and we have now the flexibility for that,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner told The Philly Soccer Page. “That’s the good news.”
Next season may be a different story, with wages and transfer fee two issues needing to be worked out to keep the Cape Verde international, but his status for this season appears safe. For a Union side that are battling at the top of the Eastern Conference, that's great news.
Brad Smith
Latest news: Sounders are "hopeful" Smith can stay ... loan runs thru July 31
News has been scant on this front, with the Sounders ostensibly still looking for a way to keep Smith, who is on loan from Bournemouth in the Premier League. Still no update, other than that his loan runs through July 31, so they have a month to figure it out.
"We love Brad Smith, he's done great for us," Sounders GM Garth Lagerwey said on May 8. "We would love for him to stay, I met with his agent and had a good, positive meeting. We're hopeful that Brad can stay with us past July."
The Sounders added left-sided player Joevin Jones, who can play either fullback or left midfield. Between him and Nouhou Tolo, Seattle have insurance should Smith be forced to return to England.
Ali Adnan
Latest news: Whitecaps continue to work to keep Adnan with time running out
The Whitecaps are hoping to hold on to Adnan, but time is ticking. His loan expires on July 1, mere days away, while a source confirmed that the club continue to put in full effort behind the scenes to keep him in Vancouver.
Head coach Marc Dos Santos is asked nearly daily about Adnan's future.
"We're also looking at the possibility of keeping him in a definite way, owning the player," Dos Santos told TSN 1040 on Monday. "There are a lot of different talks happening. This situation needs to be solved this week."
Adnan's case is an interesting one: The Iraqi was on loan from Udinese in Italy to Atalanta, but had his contract terminated earlier this year due to a rift with the head coach. The decision came after the January transfer window closed, meaning Adnan could not be registered by Udinese, thus leading to the decision to loan him out until the summer to a place he could play. Eddie Segura

Latest news: LAFC will keep Segura, sources say
MLSsoccer.com can confirm reports that LAFC will make Segura's loan a permanent transfer, though the fee remains undisclosed.
Segura, 22, has been an integral part to the Supporters' Shield leaders blistering start to 2019. He's the only player to appear in every minute for LAFC, who have conceded just 13 goals in 16 matches.
Niko Hamalainen

Latest news: To be determined...
Hamalainen was signed on loan from QPR and the American-born defender has made three appearances for LAFC. His only start happened to be the only game his side have lost this season.
His future, however, is still undecided.
