TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
Mexican national team veteran Andres Guardado has spoken of his interest in a move to MLS, discussing the strong possibility of moving stateside next year in an episode of “Six Dreams,” an Amazon Prime documentary series centered around him and five other top players in Spain’s La Liga.
A versatile midfielder known for his technical quality and tempo-setting abilities, Guardado has repeatedly been linked to MLS over the years – specifically LAFC and Atlanta United ahead of their respective expansion debuts – and said he’s received strong formal offers from the league. Up to now, however, he has chosen to stick it out in Europe as he flies El Tri's flag in some of the toughest leagues in the world.
Guardado was reported to be very close to joining LAFC last summer, but instead elected to move from Dutch powers PSV Eindhoven to Spanish side Real Betis, helping the Andalusians qualify for this season’s UEFA Europa League via a sixth-place finish in La Liga.
“I have it clear, if we qualify for Europe I stay one more year to play with Betis. If not, I would look at the option again and go to the United States. I already wanted to leave, they offered me a good contract and apart from everything I would be closer to Mexico, and after so many years and I said good, I'm leaving,” said Guardado in “Six Dreams.” He eventually passed on his MLS offer to join Betis.
Guardado, who turns 32 later this year, also mentioned his desire to someday finish his career at Atlas, the Guadalajara club where he began his professional career in 2005.
