Mexican newspapers react to Club America's Campeones Cup loss to Atlanta

Club America – Campeones Cup – solemn look

US media certainly noticed last night’s Campeones Cup win for Atlanta United, but what about the press down in Mexico?

Just took a look at the cover of Cancha, which mocked Club America for the 3-2 loss to last year’s MLS Cup winners. Head coach Miguel Herrera, who praised Atlanta’s level and the rise of MLS in his post-game remarks, wasn’t the only one left with a strong impression.

Other sport newspapers in Mexico didn’t quite take a dig at the Liga MX club, instead choosing to minimize the result. Record opted to highlight other stories, with the 3-2 scoreline barely visible.

Esto took a similar approach, instead putting former Atlanta coach Tata Martino on the cover. He’s now the coach of the Mexican national team.

Over in the online universe, popular Mexican outlet Medio Tiempo didn't quite have it as top-of-the-page news, but had a whole carousel dedicated 'América's disaster' even into the mid-afternoon on Thursday.

As the rivalry heats up between MLS and Liga MX, the media is certainly taking notice. But one has to also wonder what treatment Club América would have received had they won?

Perhaps we’ll find out when the 2020 Campeones Cup comes around.
