Competitions explained
MLS regular season: When Messi joined Inter Miami, they sat 15th in the Eastern Conference standings and needed to make up a 12-point gap to reach the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs. The top nine teams reach the playoffs, but Miami can't mathematically qualify after their Matchday 37 result.
Leagues Cup: Messi made his Inter Miami debut in this World Cup-style tournament between all 47 MLS and Liga MX teams, who paused domestic competition to compete. The top two teams in each group reached the knockout stage, which culminated in an Aug. 19 final the Herons won.
US Open Cup: Messi and Inter Miami defeated Supporters' Shield-leading FC Cincinnati in the tournament semifinals on Aug. 23. Messi, due to injury, then missed the Sept. 27 final defeat against Houston Dynamo FC.
Messi's biggest moments: 2023 season
July 21: Messi produced an all-time Major League Soccer moment during his Inter Miami CF debut, scoring a 94th-minute free kick that will forever be played on highlight reels. The left-footed strike came from atop the box, delivering a 2-1 win over Liga MX foe Cruz Azul to begin their Leagues Cup group stage.
Aug. 2: Of course Messi wasn't done in Leagues Cup. The GOAT netted a second-straight brace, powering a 3-1 win over Florida Derby rivals Orlando City SC to reach the Round of 16.
Aug. 6: Another game, another brace, another free-kick golazo. This time, Messi's masterpiece sent Inter Miami through to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals after a 4-4 draw vs. FC Dallas (they won 5-3 on PKs).
Aug. 19: It took penalty kicks (and another Messi golazo), but the Herons earned their first-ever trophy with a title-raising Leagues Cup night at Nashville SC. The result saw Messi win a world-record 44th trophy for club and country.
Aug. 26: On his formal MLS debut, Messi capped a 2-0 win at the New York Red Bulls with a sublime give-and-go combination with Benjamin Cremaschi.
