First signed by the Montreal Impact in February, center back Luis Binks was transferred to Serie A’s Bologna in August after some strong performances at the back. The Englishman was then loaned back to the Canadian side for the remainder of the season in anticipation of a move to the Italian side in January. But those plans could change according to Binks.
“I wouldn’t mind another season here. It’s a good league to come and learn. But being away from home, if the world is how it is next year, it’ll be very difficult being away for another 12 months,” he recently told the Montreal Gazette.
While Binks expected to see loved ones regularly when he initially came to MLS, the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented him from seeing his parents and girlfriend in England. “It’s not been easy. I haven’t seen anyone in a long time. The longer it goes on, the more difficult it becomes. But I wanted to come and play first-team football. For me to move on and move up, I felt this was the right move,” he said.
Earning the trust of head coach Thierry Henry quickly, Binks has become a regular starter for the Montreal side, featuring in two Concacaf Champions League matches and 17 of 19 regular-season games. He missed two games due to yellow card accumulation.
“Maybe I’m too aggressive but I’m learning, game by game,” he said. “It frustrates me so much not being able to play. I try and take the small positives and use it as a time to learn. The mistakes I’m making won’t happen again.”
