TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade
LAFC have acquired defender Marco Farfan from the Portland Timbers in exchange for $300,000 General Allocation Money, the clubs announced Sunday during the league's half-day trade window.
The deal was originally reported by ESPN earlier this month, with Sunday's releases deeming it official.
Farfan, 22, had spent his youth and professional career with the Timbers, starting with their academy before making 34 appearances (23 starts) at the MLS level. He has also played in 56 games for Timbers 2. He was called up to the latest US men's national team camp and played 45 minutes off the bench in the 6-0 romp of El Salvador for his senior international debut.
“I have known Marco for the better part of 20 years and to see his growth as a player and a person is remarkable,” Portland general manager Gavin Wilkinson said in Portland's release. “He is an incredible young man that has set the bar very high for every player coming through our academy. We understand Marco’s desire to seek a new challenge and wish him all the success in world.”
Farfan became the club's youngest-ever signing when he inked his Homegrown deal in 2016. He joins LAFC to add to their options in defense.
A natural left back, he'll provide competition and cover for LAFC's regular starter Diego Palacios. He also made three starts at right back in 2020 for Portland, giving LAFC boss Bob Bradley another versatile option. Right back was a problem area for Bradley's side, with Andy Najar often out with injuries.
