The LA Galaxy have signed Uruguayan center back Diego Polenta with the use of Targeted Allocation Money, the club announced Thursday.
Polenta, 28, last played for Club Nacional de Football in Uruguay’s first division, where he made 136 appearances across all competitions. He spent a few years in Italy between Genoa and Bari. He only made one appearance for the Genoa first team in Serie A, though featured regularly for Bari in Serie B, where he made 83 appearances.
“Diego is a strong and gifted defender in his prime that we believe can become a top defender in Major League Soccer,” Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese said in a statement. “He has experience playing at a very high level in Uruguay and he will contribute to an area of need in our defense. We are excited to add him to our roster and look forward to integrating him into our team as we prepare for the upcoming season.”
The Galaxy conceded 64 goals in 2018 en route to missing the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
