Jermaine Jones is one step closer to playing for his third MLS club in as many years.
The LA Galaxy acquired the rights to the US international and World Cup veteran from the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, trading away their highest first-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft (as of 24 hours before the draft) and a conditional second-round pick in the 2018 SuperDraft in return.
Jones is currently out of contract, meaning the Galaxy -- who confirmed last week that they had been in talks with the German-born midfielder -- still must sign him.
The 35-year-old Jones spent one season in Colorado. While hampered by injury for much of the year, he still scored three goals and recorded two assists in nine appearances during the regular season. Jones also appeared in all four of Colorado's postseason matches, notching one more assist as the Rapids reached the Western Conference Championship.
Jones, who spent 14 years in Europe before coming to MLS, played two seasons in New England before being traded to Colorado for general allocation money and the Rapids' first-round pick in the 2017 SuperDraft.
