It happened just two weeks after he was shown a red card for his tackle after the final whistle in a May 22 game for the Vancouver Whitecaps against rivals the Portland Timbers. Costa Rica defender Kendall Waston again garnered a straight red in the 94th minute of Saturday's 0-0 Copa America Centenario game between Costa Rica and Paraguay at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
On May 22, Waston tackled Dairon Asprilla of Portland late, and later claimed that he had not heard the final whistle in the Timbers' 4-2 victory. (See a video of that tackle here.)
Waston would later apologize on Twitter for that infraction and promise to do better.
But in the dying seconds of added time in Costa Rica's Copa America opener, Waston was at it again, scissoring down Paraguay's Nelson Valdez in midfield. (See video here--the tackle is at :07, and the replay of the tackle is at 1:15.)
Waston was one of several MLS players who appeared in the game, including Valdez himself, who plays for the Seattle Sounders, and entered the game as a substitute in the 73rd minute. Costa Rica defender Ronald Matarrita, of NYCFC, played all 90 minutes, while Montreal Impact's Johan Venegas came on in the 67th minute. Costa Rica forward Alvaro Saborio, of D.C. United, was an unused substitute.
