Justin Morrow made his return to Toronto FC official this week when signing a new contract with the club. But while he is a familiar face for the Eastern Conference side, the team will be embarking on a new journey in 2021.
Longtime head coach Greg Vanney exited for the LA Galaxy, and in his place came former New York Red Bulls head coach Chris Armas, giving one of the league's top teams a fresh look.
Morrow talked an eventful offseason on The Call Up, mentioning both the surprise of Vanney's announcement and the opportunity it provided the team.
"I think everything that we've gone through as a team up until this point has prepared us for this moment," Morrow said. "Greg leaving, I think, was a surprise to many of us. Many of us didn't see it coming but since that's happened, I think we all reflected on it and realized that change is constant in sports and once you embrace that and know that maybe a new voice could be the thing that gets us even to another level."
Morrow described the opportunity to give Toronto a new identity on the pitch as "a special thing," and feels the team is well positioned to make progress under a new coach.
"What we're going through right now is like a refresh moment and it can be a new team out there with some of the same players, playing a different style," Morrow added. "I think that's very interesting because one of the things that Greg did so well with our team was helped us play some different styles and different formations. We have that in our arsenal, we have that in our tool belt already, and so now, even with a new coach and a new style, it just becomes another weapon for us and I think it's going to land very well."
