Toronto FC forward Jozy Altidore's return from a four-game layoff Saturday was marred not only by the result at BMO Field, a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Union, but the potential loss of two other key players.
Auro (back spasms) and Laurent Ciman (ankle injury) both exited the game in the second half for Toronto, both parts of a backline that has struggled mightily this season, conceding 17 goals in 10 games overall and 12 in their last six.
Auro's injury came during the sequence that led to Jamiro Monteiro's game-winning goal. Ciman's came a few minutes later, with the Belgian unable to exit the playing field under his own power.
The club has yet to give specifics on either injury, but coach Greg Vanney addressed both with reporters postgame.
Altidore, meanwhile, came on for an 18-minute shift in his return from his most-recent hamstring ailment. The abbreviated shift may have been made with one eye toward Toronto's busy upcoming schedule. They welcome D.C. United to BMO Field on Wednesday night (8 pm ET | TSN, MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in the US).
