It didn’t take Jonathan Lewis long to get a measure of revenge against his former club.
The speedy winger, who was traded from New York City FC to the Colorado Rapids in May, had scored in his last three MLS games. But the 22-year-old US international burned his ex-club with an assist on 16-year-old Sebastian Anderson’s first MLS goal in the 6th minute Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Lewis ran onto a through ball, beating Sebastien Ibeagha in a footrace to the ball, staying on his feet after absorbing a bit of contact and slipping a ball across the face of goal where Anderson slid in to tap into the net.
Lewis, who started just six games in two-plus seasons with NYCFC after the Cityzens selected him third overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, has been in the Rapids starting XI in five of the six games he’s appeared in since the trade, which sent $650,000 in Targeted Allocation Money and a 2020 international roster slot to NYCFC.
