Jermaine Jones, who featured for three MLS teams to cap a nearly 20-year professional career, has announced his retirement from professional soccer today, via an Instagram message.
The 36-year-old, German-born Jones, who played the majority of his club soccer in the Bundesliga (with Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen, and FC Schalke 04), came to MLS in August 2014 as a Designated Player, helping the New England Revolution to an Eastern Conference playoff run and a memorable MLS Cup final appearance against the LA Galaxy.
Jones stayed with the Revs through the 2015 season, then moved to the Colorado Rapids in 2016 for a single season, before signing with the Galaxy for 2017. In total, Jones featured in 67 matches (57 regular season/10 post season), netting seven goals and adding 13 assists from his defensive midfield position.
Jones also was a fixture in the US national team, with a pivotal goal in the 2014 World Cup in the team's 2-2 draw with Portugal a highlight of his 69 caps with the senior squad.
Jones, whose MLS contract ran out at the end of the '17 season, played one match this year with Ventura County Fusion of the USL PDL.
