Jamaica and Panama square off in the Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinals Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with the winner advancing to the semifinals July 3 in Nashville.
This is the second all-time meeting in the Gold Cup between the Reggae Boyz and Los Canaleros with the teams playing to a 1-1 draw during the group stage in 1993.
Jamaica
Jamaica finished atop Group C, but did so rather unconvincingly with one win and two draws, including a 1-1 result against Curacao on the final day of the group stage Monday at Banc of California Stadium to reach the Gold Cup quarterfinals for a third consecutive tournament and seventh time overall. Shamar Nicholson opened the scoring for Jamaica, which rotated four of its front six, on 14 minutes, but Curacao leveled on a stunning shot by Jurien Gaari in second-half stoppage time.
The Reggae Boyz, whose only win came against Honduras in Kingston, secured five points in a group that wasn't decided until the last matchday. Curacao claimed second on goal differential after El Salvador fell to Honduras in the group's final match.
Panama
Victories against Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana secured Panama's seventh consecutive spot in the quarterfinals ahead of a tight 1-0 loss to the United States Wednesday night at Children's Mercy Park.
With a chance to finish atop Group D, Los Canaleros fell to rotated USMNT, 1-0, on Jozy Altidore's 66th-minute goal. Panama only forced goalkeeper Sean Johnson to make one save.
