Their MLS seasons have gone somewhat in reverse of each other, with Cory Burke winning a recent starting role for the Philadelphia Union and Darren Mattocks seeing his playing time at D.C. United diminish with Wayne Rooney's arrival.
However, each forward bagged a brace for the Reggae Boyz as Jamaica opened their Concacaf Nations League qualifying with a 4-0 victory over the Cayman Islands on Sunday in Kingston.
Mattocks required only two minutes to pounce for his first goal, and Burke — playing wide right of Mattocks in Theodore Whitmore's 4-3-3 formation — doubled the hosts' lead 10 minutes before halftime.
Mattocks' second — and second via header — came 13 minutes after the break, before Burke wrapped up Jamaica's scoring in the 66th minute.
Canada sets the record
In other CNL play, plenty of MLS faces were involved in Canada's 8-0, national record-breaking triumph over the US Virgin Islands on Sunday in Florida. Toronto FC's Jonathan Osorio opened the scoring six minutes into his 90 minute shift, while Samuel Piette of the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps' teen phenom Alphonso Davies also went the distance. Vancouver's Doneil Henry played the opening 45 minutes, while his MLS teammate Marcel de Jong made a late 20-minute cameo.
The other Nations League
Meanwhile across the pond, several familiar faces participated in UEFA Nations League competition.
Chicago's Nicolas Hasler went the distance to help Liechtenstein bounce back from their loss to Armenia last week with a 2-0 victory over Gibraltar, while Real Salt Lake's Albert Rusnak saw his Slovakia side concede a late penalty during his 20-minute shift of a 1-0 loss to Ukraine.
Unlucky Peruanos
After being arguably the best-performing side not to advance to the knockout phase of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Peru's hard luck has continued into the first international break of the new cycle. For a second time in four days, La Blanquirroja conceded a winner to a European power after the 80th minute, this time in a 2-1 loss to Germany. Orlando City's Yoshi Yotun went 76 minutes, and Seattle Sounders forward Raul Ruidiaz went 85.
Kamara can't come through
And in African Cup of Nations qualifying, Whitecaps striker Kei Kamara and his Sierra Leone side failed to find the goal they needed to earn an away point in a 1-0 loss to Ethiopia in Group F. The defeat brings all four teams in the group level on three points, when a draw would've put Sierra Leone top heading into a tricky away fixture at Ghana in their next match. The top two in each qualifying group advance to the 2019 tournament.
