The Hungarian national team have called in two Sporting Kansas City players for European Championship qualifying action during next month’s FIFA international window.
Striker Krisztian Nemeth and center back Botond Barath will depart Sporting after their MLS match at the Houston Dynamo on June 1 to join the Magyars for two key Group E qualifiers: a visit to Azerbaijan on June 8 and a home match vs. Wales in Budapest on June 11. That rules the duo out of Sporting’s visit to Toronto FC on June 8.
Hungary are battling for a spot at Euro 2020 against Group E counterparts Azerbaijan, Wales, Slovakia and Croatia, with the top two finishers advancing. The competition kicked off in March, when the Magyars lost 2-0 at Slovakia before notching a 2-1 home win over Croatia.
Barath, 27, joined SKC over the winter and is seeking to add to his four career senior international caps. Nemeth, 30, is currently Sporting’s leading scorer in 2019 with 10 goals across all competitions and has made 35 international appearances to date.
