The entire world turns its gaze to Rio de Janeiro this week as the 2016 Summer Olympics kick off. And as befits the host nation's status as soccer's spiritual home, the beautiful game will be front and center for the entire two-plus weeks of competition and celebration.
Twelve nations will compete in the women's soccer tournament, starting Wednesday at six venues across Brazil, including the four-time gold medalists and defending champion United States, along with 2012 bronze-medal winners Canada.
Headlined by defending gold medalists Mexico and the Neymar-led host nation, the men's competition begins on Thursday and features 16 countries from across the world, with rosters limited to Under-23-aged players plus three over-age additions per team.
